6. Gays The Word, Marchmont Street, Bloomsbury
Founded in 1979 by gay socialist group Gay Icebreakers, Gay’s the Word was for a long time the only LGBTQ+ bookshop in the UK. Today it is the oldest such bookshop in continuous operation, and since its opening it has been used as a community and resource centre for a diverse range of LGBTQ+ groups including the Lesbian Discussion Group, Gay Black Group and the Gay Disabled Group. It's also the venue for meetings of TransLondon.
A blue plaque honouring gay activist and co-founder of LGSM (Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners) Mark Ashton sits above the shop. Ashton died aged 26 in 1986 from AIDS-related pneumonia and his legacy was immortalised in the 2014 film Pride.
