Writer E. M. Forster used this address as his London base throughout the 1930s, though the original building in which the flat existed is now demolished. A very private homosexual, Forster had numerous male lovers throughout his life and his longest relationship was with policeman Robert Buckingham, whom he openly shared with Buckingham’s wife, May.

Forster had five novels published in his lifetime and a sixth, ‘Maurice’ (written sixty years before) was published posthumously a year after his death in 1971. A coming of age novel dealing with homosexual love between the upper and lower classes, Forster did not pursue its publication in his lifetime due to the public and legal attitudes towards homosexuality at that time and a fear, owing to its happy ending, that the novel would be liable to prosecution while homosexuality remained illegal in the UK.

Print is 20 x 25cm, unframed, signed, numbered and comes with the above accompanying text.
